Uh, blogger dude, you say to me, you okay? You got something wrong with your head? It’s kinda—-raining outside. As in, not lovely. As in, gray. As in, the color it’s been for the past six months 98% of the time.
The sun’s shining brighter than ever here in Neal’s camp. =) You might only see the rain—-but we see the rainbows. Ask the people in Willard, who Neal went door-to-door visiting with Ivan and Harrison, chatting them up and talking about the future of NU for three hours after the debate. Or talk to the crowds at the BK Lounge at 2am, who were extremely enthusiastic about meeting Neal while Mr. Yocom campaigned over his mug down the street at Hundo. Ask Sam Nayman, who showed that not all Northwestern students are apathetic after all, grilling Neal on his platform and his ideas for reform of ASG. I certainly was impressed, and Sam seemed to walk away pretty satisfied with Neal’s responses (Let me know if I’m getting any of this wrong, Sam. My email’s right at the top of this page!).
Speaking of accountability and full disclosure, let’s talk about Northwestern’s favorite tree-eater, the Daily! This morning, sometime around 2:30am, the Daily posted on the front page of its website articles on each of the candidates running for each executive position in ASG. Check out the screenshot.
Notice anything fishy?
I thought so too.
So I read through the articles, and found that they were all surprisingly positive. The Daily really had outdone itself this time—it clearly articulated the strengths of each of the four “featured” presidential candidates…
…and then Joyce helpfully directed me to a link to Neal’s article, dug up out of the dredges of the Daily website. As I began to read, I was overcome with the realization that the Daily is Northwestern’s Fox News, keeping things fair and balanced—by skewing the scales completely.
Let’s compare the first two sentences of Mark’s article with those of Neal’s:
Mark’s: “In a presidential election where leadership experience is at a premium, Weinberg junior Mark Crain trades on an excess of it. As president of For Members Only, Crain leads one of the most prominent student groups on campus.”
Neal’s: “In fall 2006, Neal Sales-Griffin and a friend lived in a car for five days by the Rock in hopes of winning a Chevrolet Aveo. Sales-Griffin’s stunt, which depended on getting more votes than students competing at other universities, didn’t succeed.”
Gotta love objectivity. Granted, the article does say some positive things about Neal, but most, if not every, are preceded by some sort of practically unrelated caveat. Or poorly-formed sentences that are difficult to read. Doesn’t help the Daily’s reputation any more when I start hearing from three different people today that a certain Daily writer was calling up people, asking (only) about “Neal’s weaknesses”. Fishing for something?
Feel free to read the whole articles here. But I’m definitely much preferring NBN’s indiscriminate-mocking tactic in its articles, especially this one about the candidates’ Facebook groups.

All in all, it was a pretty sweet day. The debate went smoothly with a huge turnout of NSG supporters, and Neal finished strong. A huge number of people offered to help out with the campaign, and the campaign team is pumped.
2am quote from NSG—Ben, I’m back in my groove, now!
Smear all you want, Mr. Daily Writer, but I’m telling you, our straightforwardness and approachability will still shine through your clouds**. :)
Love,
Me.
**P.S. To those of you at the Daily who still entertain the idea of liking Neal, we’d be more than happy to accept your endorsement. =)
P.P.S. We’ve got some cool stuff coming out in the next couple days—keep your eyes peeled!
